Background
Due to repeated water pollution incidents, including the 1991 Phenol Incident and the 1994 Ammoniacal Nitrogen Incident, in the Nakdonggang River, which provides 73 percent of Daegu’s water, a revolutionary water quality improvement plan was needed to regain Daegu citizens’ trust in their city’s tap water. In response to the drop in water quality, due to industrialization and urbanization, and the diversification of pollutants, the purification system has been perfected while emergency response measures for sudden water pollution accidents have been improved to supplement the weaknesses of the existing water purification process. Together with higher quality standards for drinking water, these measures have been introduced to provide better and cleaner tap water to Daegu citizens.
Advanced treatment: process
The current purification process includes an additional step that eliminates odor-causing substances, carcinogenic compounds (THM), and other undesirable substances that are difficult to remove through a standard purification process.
